What Do Antioxidants Do?
Antioxidants are nutrients that sacrifice themselves to oxygen. This reaction enables antioxidant compounds to interact with free radical generators and quench free radical production.
What are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are molecules generated by cells in the body upon exposure to toxins, viruses, germs, fungi and chemical contamination taken in from the air, water and food. They contain extra oxygen and destroy unwanted invaders through oxidation. However, after producing free radicals for their own protection, body cells themselves also become targets and must ward off the free radicals with an antioxidant defence composed of nutrients sometimes known as free radical scavengers.
Free Radical diseases
The Annals of Internal Medicine published a list of free radical diseases. Free radicals are the sole cause of only a few diseases, but they are involved in all the following:
- Ageing, disorders of premature ageing, immune deficiency of ageing
- Heart disease
- Autoimmune diseases
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Amyloid diseases
- Radiation injury
- Parkinson’s disease
Human studies in Great Britain have found that approximately 80% of arthritis suffers found significant relief from pain and reduced swelling and inflammation by taking a combination of antioxidant nutrients: vitamin A, C and E plus the trace mineral selenium.
